At the outset, prevention is better than a cure. It is therefore vital to educate people about the causes of disability in children, including the marriage of close relatives and damage to the fetus by infection. After this, careful management at birth and during aftercare is necessary to limit the risk of disability. Young children require protection from diseases such as polio.
It must be accepted, however, that a percentage of the population will enter childhood with some form of disability. It is then critically important to identify these children as quickly as possible to provide early intervention.
Early intervention usually means the impact of the disability can be reduced or even eliminated, with the family receiving professional support on the best ways to manage their special child. Then the child must be educated (and has a right to this). Education should begin at an early age and continue into adulthood. The AMSEC will provide all these services.
